2092. Mrs D A Schäfer (DA) to ask the Minister of Police:
(1) What total number of cases of (a) murder and (b) attempted murder have been reported in (i) Hanover Park, (ii) Lavender Hill, (iii) Elsies River, (iv) Manenberg and (v) Bishop Lavis in Cape Town in the (aa) 2007-08, (bb) 2008-09, (cc) 2009-10, (dd) 2010-11 and (ee) 2011-12 financial years;
(2)(a) how many of these cases of (i) murder and (ii) attempted murder in each area have been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for prosecution and (b) why have the remainder of the cases not been referred to the NPA for prosecution;
(3) whether any of the cases were identified as being gang related; if not, how was this conclusion reached; if so, how many in each case?

The number of gang related cases was obtained through information in the relevant case dockets and the actual number of victims and suspects varies per individual case.
The criminal profiles of victims and suspects are obtained and used to determine whether incidents are gang related.
The victims and suspects are reluctant to cooperate and their gang involvement is generally denied by their relatives and friends.
