2011 matric results a vindication - ANC

Jackson Mthembu says govt's approach to education bearing desire fruit

ANC STATEMENT ON 2011 MATRIC RESULTS

The African National Congress welcomes the 2,4 percent improvement in the matric pass rate for 2011. We are pleased with the significant improvement in the pass rate, which represents an important step in the right direction.

We would also like to acknowledge the results from the Western Cape, as a leading province, and an improvement registered by the Mpumalanga province.

The increase in matric pass rate in the last few years, from 60.6% in 2009 to 67.8% in 2010, and now to 70.2% in 2011, is important as it demonstrates that our government's approach to education is bearing the desired fruit. This is also a testimony that the President's meeting with about 1500 school principals soon after he took the presidency in 2009, to understand the challenges they face in their work, was not in vain.

These results also vindicate the correctness of the decision of the ANC led government to split basic and tertiary education into separate departments to ensure special attention.

We congratulate the department of basic education, its ministry, the administrators, School Governing Councils, the teachers, the parents and the class of 2011 for a focused rewarding effort.  WELL DONE CLASS OF 2011!
