Federation says in this case the innocent have been exonerated

COSATU welcomes dropping of charges against Peggy Nkonyeni and Mike Mabuyakhulu

The Congress of South African Trade Unions congratulates Comrades Peggy Nkonyeni and Mike Mabuyakhulu - Provincial ANC officials in KZN - on the withdrawal of charges of fraud and corruption laid against them by the National Prosecution Authority.

The Acting Director of Public prosecutions has admitted that "upon a thorough and interrogative assessment, available evidence, including consultations with some key witnesses, there are no prospects of a successful prosecution; therefore these charges cannot be sustained against them during trial".

COSATU has consistently demanded, and will continue to insist, that allegations of corruption and fraud must always be taken seriously and fully investigated, in order to protect the integrity of our public institutions and those who serve within them. We have however always stressed that this is necessary not only to convict and punish those guilty of such offences, but also to exonerate the innocent, as in this case.
