Union says employers must resolve issues of conflict that are causing the attacks

Defend the health and safety of truck drivers from conflict

18 July 2023

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted with concern the burning of trucks in various parts of the country. These incidents put the lives of the truck drivers in danger. We demand that the employers must resolve issues of conflict that are causing burning of trucks.

"We also demand that the employers provide security and comfort relief and easy work for the trucking industry to find long lasting solutions to protect the health and safety of the truck drivers. We have noted some reports that some of the alleged perpetrators were arrested. There must be thorough investigation on this matter that also impacts on the livelihood of many in the country," said Masibulele Naki, NUM National Health and Safety Secretary.

We expect nothing else but employers to take full responsibility for the health and safety of their employees and act to avoid putting the health and safety of the truck drivers at risk.
