Fraudsters targeting artists in World Cup scam - Police

Musa Zondi says artists are being approached about performing, are then ripped off

Beware world cup opening and closing ceremonies scam

The South African Police Service has appealed to performing artists to be on the lookout for a scam where bogus organisers are offering them a berth on the music festivals associated with the FIFA World Cup.

This follows a number of complaints which have been received from various artists that were approached for their details and an advance fee to secure a contract for performing at the festivals . These complaints have been received by the Commercial Crime unit. They are investigating the origins thereof.

The scam promises artists that they will perform in opening and closing ceremonies. Further, the artists or individuals are asked to give away their particulars including bank accounts before the contract can be secured.

A selling point is the offer of free 5-star accommodation, meals and transport while in the country.

Police have appealed to anyone who received this offer to treat it with suspicion and extreme caution.
