President Jacob Zuma appoints new Auditor General

President Jacob Zuma has, in terms of section 193(4) read with 189 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and on the recommendation of the National Assembly, appointed Mr Thembekile Kimi Makwetu, as Auditor-General with effect from today, 1 December 2013.

Mr Makwetu, a Chartered Accountant by profession, has served as Deputy Auditor-General for six years.

He matriculated from St John's College in Umtata in 1984. He has a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy from the University of Natal.

President Zuma has congratulated the new Auditor-General and wishes him well in his new role.

The appointment of the new Auditor General is for a period of seven years.

The President has also thanked the former Auditor-General, Mr Terence Nombembe for his efficient and effective service over the past few years.
