Media Statement by Johann van Loggerenberg:

Following events that have been unfolding since May 2014, I and my employer the South African Revenue Service ("SARS") have come to a mutual agreement to amicably part ways. My resignation was in good faith and accepted as such by SARS, with the interests of SARS as institution, the state and the country as whole as uppermost considerations.

I acknowledge that I erred in personal judgment concerning a matter in my private life and that this led to unforeseen consequences that were outside of my control. I believe I need to take responsibility and accountability for this. Accepting accountability has always been part of the ethos within SARS and I wish to honour this completely. I sincerely apologise to SARS, its employees and the country for my mistake.

I have reached a point in the process where the events have taken a significant toll on my family and loved ones, others and my own life, and I believe that the parting of ways with SARS is in the best interests of SARS and the country as a whole. I accept that when Commissioner Moyane arrived at SARS, he acted in absolute good faith when faced with matters and did so in the best interests of SARS as state institution.

I wish to convey my appreciation to all current and former SARS employees with whom I have worked with over the past 16 years at SARS, especially those that served under me as manager. It was a privilege and honour to have served with outstanding civil servants that South Africa can be proud of. I call on all South Africans to support SARS as an institution in the best manner a loyal citizen can.

I encourage SARS staff to support Commissioner Moyane and his management team with the same dedication and vigour as they did with previous management. I wish Commissioner Moyane and all SARS employees well in their future endeavours and hope people will take a lesson from my own experience in life.

I confirm that the matter between SARS and I have been fully and finally dealt with, completely so and in all respects.

I will not entertain any further requests or enquiries from the media in this regard.
