Mogoeng's opponents should now accept his leadership - SACP

Party says that the challenge of transforming judiciary remains paramount

SACP STATEMENT ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE CHIEF JUSTICE

The SACP notes with appreciation the announcement made by the President yesterday in the appointment of the new Chief Justice, Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng. This decision by the President has helped to speedily settle the question of the leadership of the Judiciary, thus ensuring the continued stability of this important arm of the state.

But in addition the appointment provides the judiciary with an opportunity to reflect on its own role in strengthening our democracy, and to further embark on the necessary transformation programme so that our justice system and the courts also serve the interests of the workers and the poor.

The challenge for the transformation of the judiciary remains paramount and has to be approached by all with the urgency that it deserves. The Chief Justice has the responsibility, together with his team, to make justice accessible irrespective of  race, class and gender. More so, women, children and the disabled must be protected by our courts. Our courts need to change the reality that those without money do not have equal access to justice.

The SACP has noted some of the negative comments and energies of a liberal lobby surrounding the process of consultation and appointment of the Chief Justice, mainly for cheap political point scoring, as opposed to contributing positively to our democracy. Disagreement must never be  allowed to degenerate into venomous, opportunistic and undignified attacks.

The SACP  wishes Justice Mogoeng well, and call upon all those who were opposed to his appointment, both inside and outside the Judiciary, to accept his leadership and work with him for the sake of our country.
