NUM angered by slap on the wrist for J Arthur Brown

Former Fidentia boss fined R150 000 and given suspended sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud

NUM disappointed at Arthur Brown's light sentence

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has noted with anger the small sentence meted against Arthur Brown whom the court have found guilty on two accounts of fraud relating to the Transport Education and Training Authority and the Mantadia Assets Trust Company.

Over R1 billion went missing from his company called Fidentia which was from the Living Hands Umbrella Trust formerly Mantadia Asset Trust Company which paid money from the mineworkers provident fund to the widows and orphans of workers killed in mine accidents.

The NUM will scrutinize the judgement and sentence and decide on a way forward. The union is highly disappointed at the light sentence and the discrepancies in judgements passed by our justice system. Not so long ago, someone who stole a R100 was sentenced to ten years!
