Party says Presidency is in discussions with Russia over the repatriation of outstanding struggle heroes

ANC STATEMENT ON REPATRIATION OF CDES KOTANE, MARKS & JONES

2 SEPTEMBER 2014

The African National Congress welcomes reports from the Presidency that South Africa is in discussions with Russia on the repatriation of the remains of outstanding heroes of our struggle buried in Russia back to South Africa. As we mark Heritage Month this year, we are heartened by the fact that the South African government continues to lead efforts to ensure that those who would have paid the highest price for the liberation of South Africa and her people are never forgotten.

Comrades Moses Kotane, JB Marks and Ivor Jones are just a few of these exemplary heroes and heroines whose names continue to reverberate throughout the annals of our history, telling the story of selflessness, dedication and commitment to the course of freedom and democracy.

The African National Congress calls upon all South Africans to celebrate Heritage Month this year by once again recommitting themselves to the ideals of equality, freedom and a better life for all that so many people in the country and abroad fought for. Twenty years into democracy, it is these stories of perseverance and triumph that anchor our decisive and sustained actions to build a National Democratic Society as we move South Africa forward.
