ANC loses two seats, retains two in by-elections - IEC

Party lost a seat in Mpumalanga to the EFF, and one to the PA in the NCape

During the By-elections contested yesterday in Mpumalanga, North West and the Northern Cape provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA) both retained two (2) seats each. The ANC then lost two seats, one to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and another to the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The new ANC councillors are:

Mabel Gadimelwe Tau, in Ward 06 Siyancuma Municipality – NC078, Northern Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 50,18% of the total votes cast, compared to 62,03% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 47,06%.

Jesica Sarah White, in Ward 03 Kai !Garib Municipality– NC082, Northern Cape. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 38,22% of the total votes cast, compared to 38,57% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61,40%.

The new DA councillors are:

Jacqeline Anne Basson, in Ward 16 Matlosana Municipality – NW403, North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 67,11% of the total votes cast, compared to 65,24% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 39,68%.

Abraham Gerhardus Strydom, in Ward 17 Matlosana Municipality – NW403, North West. The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 69,95% of the total votes cast, compared to 61,73% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 34,84%.

The new EFF councillor is:

Siphiwe Florence Ngwenya, in Ward 13 Msukalingwa Municipality– MP302, Mpumalanga. The party won a seat previously held by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 60,04% of the total votes cast compared to 60,58% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 42,67%.

The new PA councillor is:

Johan Loff, in Ward 01 Sol Plaatje Municipality– NC091, Northern Cape. The party won a seat previously held by the ANC in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 53,27% of the total votes cast compared to 40,70% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 56,15%.
