Tshediso Matona new director of Public Enterprises - DPE

Former DTI DG redeployed across to head department

Statement on the appointment of Director-General of Public Enterprises

15 Dec 2010

The Minister of Public Enterprises is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Tshediso Matona as the new Director-General of the Department of Public Enterprises.

Mr Matona is an economist and industrial policy expert, and has been instrumental in shaping the country's industrial policy framework. His skills and expertise will be key in driving the SOEs' contribution to realising the vision of the New Growth Path and ensuring that SOEs are key instruments to support the State's developmental agenda.

The appointment of the DG provides leadership stability to the organisation, and allows it to better focus its attention on its shareholder oversight role. The DG has been transferred from the Department of Trade and Industry, where he has served in the same capacity since July 2006.

The transfer has been approved by the president as the relevant authority, acting in terms of Section 12.1 of the Public Service Act.

Mr Matona's appointment is with effect from January 2011, for the remainder of his term of office, namely until June 2012.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the acting DG, Dr Andrew Shaw, for his leadership during this time.
