Why did Zuma axe Barbara Hogan? - ID

Lance Greyling asks whether minister's honesty lost her her job

ID Concerned over Barbara Hogan's Resignation

Independent Democrats Spokesperson on Public Enterprises and Parliamentary Chief Whip, Lance Greyling MP, has stated that he is concerned with the axing of Barbara Hogan as Public Enterprises Minister and her subsequent resignation as an ANC Member of Parliament.

"It is still not clear what the reasons were behind the President's decision to dismiss Barbara Hogan as Public Enterprises Minister," stated Greyling. "While in the case of other Ministers it is clear that non-performance played a role in the President's dismissal decisions. What is not clear in this case is whether other factors played a part."

"The fact that she took a hard line on restoring good corporate governance in public entities and that she was firmly opposed to some of the major conflicts of interests such as the ANC's Chancellor House benefitting from Eskom contracts, could ultimately have played a role in her demise," adds Greyling.

The reality is that Public Enterprises is the Ministry with arguably the most public resources under its control and it is vital that its leadership ensures that all spaces for corruption and conflict of interests are effectively closed down. The ID is therefore hoping that the new Minister, Malusi Gigaba, will remain committed to ensuring that good corporate governance at our public entities is put in place and that no conflicts of interest are allowed to take place under his watch.

The ID will remain vigilant in exposing all forms of corruption in the public entities and we hope that we can work with the new Minister in ensuring that delivery and clean governance takes root.
