"Butchery on the chopping block!" - Daily Sun

"Jub Jub's dad Syd falls on hard times!" - front page lead, April 17 2015

Daily Sun (April 17 2015) - EVEN AS the Red Ants were removing his stock, Sydney Maarohanye still tried to reason with the sheriff.

But this time there was no mercy for Sydney, the father of convicted hip hop star Jub Jub.

IT IS THE END OF THE LINE FOR SYD’S MEAT AND VEG BUSINESS.

After losing his other butchery late last year, on Wednesday Sydney’s butchery in Protea Glen extension 11 was shut down when the sheriff removed everything from the shop.

Now the building that used to be Syd’s Meat and Veg is dark and empty, with workers standing around wondering what they will do next.

“Suddenly the Red Ants were in the shop,” said an employee who did not want to be named.

“We were asked to leave the shop as they started taking the meat from the fridges and everything else in the store.”

Some customers had to leave without paying while others were turned away at the door.

“The men in red took over the shop and cops were standing outside,” he said.

“We stood helplessly as Sydney tried to negotiate with the Red Ants to leave his stock in the store.”

Everything was taken to the sheriff’s office in Westonaria, west of Joburg.

A woman from a shop across the road claimed Sydney apparently owes about R56 000 and a man has been coming to the shop asking for his money,” she said.

“He had two butcheries but now they’re both closed. He is having a tough time.”

A source close to Sydney said he is not on good terms with his wife, Jackie Maarohanye, Jub Jub’s mother, who is also known as Mama Jackie.

Another worker said he is afraid of losing his job.

“After the Red Ants took everything, Sydney was left with only the keys to the store.”

The sheriff told the SunTeam they were instructed to remove the stock by the Bargaining Council.

Corne van Rensburg of the council said the butchery owner owes them more than R30 000.

“Sydney was supposed to pay the council, which he hasn’t done for the past five years so we sent the sheriff.

“Everything is being held at the sheriff’s office.”

Daily Sun spoke to Sydney but he didn’t want to comment. “You were here when it happened. Just write what you saw,” he said.

Daily Sun also tried to speak to Mama Jackie but she hung up when she heard who was calling.
