317 firearms recorded lost/stolen by SAPS members so far this year - Mthethwa

Only 24 recovered. Last year 885 firearms were lost/stolen, 146 were recovered

2331. Ms D Kohler-Barnard (DA) to ask the Minister of Police:

(1) Whether, with reference to his reply to question 1384 on 6 September 2011, any firearms assigned to members of the SA Police Service (SAPS) were (a) stolen, (b) lost and/or (c) misplaced (i) in the 2011-12 financial year and (ii) since 1 April 2012; if not, how was this conclusion reached; if so, in respect of each case in each province, (aa) how many and (bb) what types of firearms;

(2) whether any of these firearms have been recovered; if not, why not, in each case; if so, in each case (a) how many and (b) what types of firearms;

(3) whether the SAPS members who left the service (a) due to retirement and (b) for any other reason in the specified periods have not yet returned their official firearms; if not, why not in each case; if so,

(4) since 31 March 2009, in each case in respect of each province, (a) how many and (b) what types of official firearms have not been returned?

(1) & (2) During the period mentioned above, the following losses and recoveries were reported on the Provisioning Administration System (PAS) as on September 2012 which is used as the Asset Register for all SAPS firearms:

(3)  As on 1 September 2012, there were no official SAPS firearms which had not been returned by SAPS members who had left the SAPS due to retirement or any other reason in the specified periods.
