DA rejects Speaker vote result - ANC Joburg

135 councillors voted in favour of motion, with 99 DA councillors voting against

DA DESPERATELY HOLDING ON

05 December 2019

Today the DA desperately held on to the position of Speaker when a motion of no confidence on its Speaker was passed by the majority of Councilors. A total of 135 Councilors voted in favor of the motion. The 30 EFF Councilors abstained from voting. A mere 99 DA Councilors voting against the motion.

Rule 82 (1) and (2) regarding voting state that

(1) Councilors decide on an item by calling either "Yes" or "No" after the Presiding Officer has put the item.

(2) Questions before Council are decided on by fifty percent plus one (1) of the Councilors present.

The rules are very clear and once the votes were cast; the Acting Speaker Councilor Christians declared to Council that the motion has passed. However, the DA did not want to accept the outcome.

We are requesting the Provincial government to intervene in this issue.

The DA led coalition's continued sabotaging of the process is a clear indication that they are not democrats and do not care about the residents of Johannesburg.
