DA Youth lodges SAHRC complaint on NWU racism

7 August 2014

The DA Youth will today lodge a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission on racist pamphlets that were distributed at the University of North West.

The pamphlets in question obviously represent hate speech and an incitement to violence. It cannot be tolerated in a democratic society where the rights of all are protected.

The pamphlets call on students to "Kill the Boer, Kill the Racist, Kill Afrikaans". The pamphlet can be viewed below.

We condemn these hateful pamphlets and call on all NWU students to reject this nonsense.

At this stage it is not clear who distributed the pamphlet and for what purpose. We are requesting that the SAHRC investigate to find out so that the responsible parties can be held to account.

We cannot tolerate racism of any form in our country, and certainly not on our university campuses. These actions are not conducive to building better race relations in South Africa.

The DA Youth will continue fighting to ensure that South Africa's university campuses are tolerant environments where mutual respect racial reconciliation is advanced. Students must be able to learn in environments where constructive engagement and cultural diversity are encouraged.
