Let rugby grow and unite the nation – COPE

Party says it opposes attempt to ban Springboks, and supports the “Mandela style approach”
Let rugby grow and unite the nation

It is common cause that South African Rugby Union should quadruple its efforts to transform rugby. Ideally, this must begin with protected school rugby to encourage a greater interest in the game while safeguarding young players against serious injuries.
It is an undeniable fact that some schools in the country have a very long tradition of rugby. The rugby authorities should twin one such school with a long rugby tradition with two other schools that have had no such rugby tradition.
There is also a great deal of merit in involving each province in competitive rugby so that black players can get plenty of game time to prove their excellence. Sticking only with the franchises as is happening presently is narrowing opportunities for rugby players. Provincial governments can give support to provincial teams competing nationally in a separate competition.
COPE does not agree with the Agency for New Agenda party, (ANA) bringing a last minute application to stop the Springboks from departing for England.
COPE supports the Mandela style approach. This will require quid pro quo. All professional players of rugby returning from England must have an opportunity to give back to developing the game within the black community. We need extensive give and take to help rugby grow and unite the nation.
COPE wishes the Springboks good success and urges them on their return to do their patriotic duty in cultivating the game across all segments of society and in all corners of the country.
The South African Rugby Union and the coaches must also proactively reach out so that everyone can see their involvement in helping the game to grow in all communities.
