Man arrested for Tshwane ANC member's murder

29 June 2016

Pretoria – A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of an ANC member in Pretoria.

The ANC supporter was shot and killed outside the Tshwane Events Centre (formerly Pretoria Showgrounds) on Sunday, June 19 as the party was set to announce Thoko Didiza as the mayoral candidate for the city.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the man was arrested in Pretoria on Tuesday.

He would appear in court either on Wednesday, or Thursday and would be facing charges of murder, she said.

The ANC supporter and four other people died and dozens were arrested for public violence and looting when violent protests broke out in Tshwane last week at the announcement of Didiza as the ANC's candidate.

Some residents wanted current mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa to be the candidate.
