Process to replace Madonsela gets under way

Cape Town – The ad-hoc committee tasked with replacing Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will have until August 31 to report back to the National Assembly.

Parliament kick-started the process on Tuesday when ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu tabled a motion in the National Assembly to establish the committee.

Their duty would be to nominate a person to replace Madonsela, once her term ends in October.

The committee will have six ANC members, two from the DA, one from the EFF and two from other parties.

The motion was agreed to.

Following the motion, the ANC said in a statement that names of six MPs have been submitted for appointment to the committee.

They were Makhosi Khoza, Thomas Bongo, Amos Masondo, Nic Koornhof, Grace Tseke, Refilwe Mothapo, while Patric Maesela would serve as an alternate member.

“We are confident that the ad hoc committee will emerge with a suitable candidate that will continue with the institution’s work of ensuring good governance and strengthening our constitutional democracy,” Mthembu said in a statement.
