Racially motivated attacks must not be tolerated – John Moodey

DA hopes a harsh sentence is given those accused of assaulting couple at KFC if found guilty

KFC assault: racially motivated attacks must not be tolerated

14 September 2017

The five men who stand accused of assaulting a couple at a KFC drive-through in Pretoria on 2 August are expected to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court today. The assault is alleged to have been racially motivated. The men are facing charges of attempted murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, and pointing a firearm.

The DA condemns racist attacks in the strongest of terms. In light of our nation’s history and the recent racially divisive campaign by Bell Pottinger on behalf of the Guptas, we should be especially intolerant of racially motivated assault.

There is no room for racially motivated assaults such as this in our young democracy. If found guilty, the DA hopes that a harsh sanction will be handed down. We must show zero tolerance to those guilty of perpetuating racism and implicated in racially motivated assault in South Africa.

The DA is committed to working on the nation building legacy of Nelson Mandela. Let us build on his dream of a rainbow nation.
