Two senior ANC members arrested for death of bodyguard

Mthatha – The ANC in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday confirmed two senior members of the party had been arrested in connection with the murder of the bodyguard of OR Tambo ANC regional chairperson and Mhlontlo Local Municipality speaker, Xolile Nkompela.

Zukile Nyontso died in a hail of bullets in an alleged assassination plot against Nkompela when the vehicle in which they were travelling was attacked in December last year.

ANC provincial spokesperson, Mlibo Qoboshiyana, confirmed both the men were high ranking officials.

Asked how the party felt about the arrests of two of their own, Qoboshiyana said justice should prevail.

"The investigations have been happening since the shooting and we are still following up on the matter and are happy that there is a breakthrough," he said.

Eastern Cape police confirmed the two men were taken in for questioning on Monday. Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni said the pair had not yet been charged.

The latest developments bring the number of people who have been implicated in the incident to four.
