Text of letter from Pierre Uys, ANC Chief Whip in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament to Premier Helen Zille, 20 October 2015

Dear Premier

Official welcome to Western Cape for Hamas

We are writing to request that you as head of the Western Cape provincial government officially welcome the delegation from Hamas to the Western Cape.

The Western Cape is indeed known across the world for its strong support for the Palestinian peoples. We are honoured to be hosting this delega tion of senior Hamas leadership who have proven that they are both freedom fighters and popular politicians who have strong support in Palestine.

Hamas have won several elections, including in Gaza city, and have fearlessly stood up against the illegal occupations and ongoing attacks by the state of Israel.

You, Premier, have previously welcomed other political leaders and personalities. It would thus be appropriate that as head of this province you represent the people of the Western Cape and openly welcome the Hamas delegation to our  province.

A Premier must represent the people of the province and as you are aware of the popularity that this visit will garner, it is our view that you have a responsibility to represent the Western Cape people.

The President of the Republic welcomed Hamas to South Africa and it is therefore only fitting that you publicly show your support for this historic  visit.

Due to security concerns, the visit was only made public very late. Therefore we need to know by end of day if you can personally welcome them, or at very least issue a public statement welcoming them to the Western Cape. They arrive on Wednesday, so your urgent response is needed.

We look forward to your response,

Pierre Uys
