DENOSA calls on nurses to join COSATU march on Labour Brokers
The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa is once more calling on all nurses who will be available to join the countrywide marches scheduled for Wednesday, March 07, 2012 organized by our giant federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) demanding the banning of Labour Brokers.
We reiterate that the COSATU campaign to ban labour brokering is part of the federation's broad Jobs and Poverty campaign launched in 1999 and further implements one of the resolutions that came out in the COSATU 10th National Congress on ‘decent work and labour brokering'.
DENOSA re-affirms COSATU's view that "labour brokers serve as intermediaries to access jobs that already exist in the economy and do not create any additional jobs". In the healthcare sector, nursing agencies are in the main recycling those nurses that are already employed, meanwhile sending a very misleading message that they are there to create more jobs.
It is our view that these agencies (brokers) are championing the recycling of mainly permanently employed nurses and further corrupt the demand and supply. In fact, these agencies have camouflaged the severity of the shortage of nurses in the country.
The frustrating delay by government to deal with staff shortages and material conditions in nursing and other health services has also allowed agencies to deprive nurses' sufficient rest.
DENOSA fully supports COSATU's call for decent jobs and defending existing ones.
