5c coin discontinued but still valid - SARB

New 10c coin will be different in colour and base material

Discontinuation of production of the 05c coin and replacement of the 10c denomination coin

24 Nov 2011

The SARB hereby advises that, with effect from 1 April 2012, Cabinet has approved the discontinuation of the production of the 5c coin and the replacement of the current 10c with a new 10c coin which is different in colour and base material.

The 5c coin will, however, remain legal tender and the public is encouraged to continue to recirculate this coin together with all South African coins. Accordingly, all banks and businesses are obliged to continue to accept the 5c coins as legal tender.

In an effort to reduce the production cost of coin, the current 10c bronze alloy coin will be replaced with a new 10c denomination coin which will be a copper plated steel coin. There will be no changes made to the themes on the 10c coin.
