7 of top 10 municipalities in 80/20 report DA run - John Steenhuisen

DA MP says this success is due to clean governance and focus on uplifting poor communities

80/20 Report confirms DA best at service delivery

27 May 2014

Yet another independent study has shown that DA-led local governments deliver best.

The South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) yesterday released its 80/20 report on local governments. The SAIRR used 80 indicators to monitor and track municipalities' performance after 20 years of democracy.

It found that 7 of the top 10 municipalities are DA-run.

They are:

Saldanha Municipality

Overstrand Municipality

Drakenstein Municipality

Mossel Bay Municipality

Swartland Municipality

Stellenbosch Municipality

The City of Cape Town

Main indicators were: the rate of poverty, proportion of people aged 20 and older who passed Grade 12 and the proportion of households with basic services such as electricity for lighting, access to piped water and access to toilets.

This success is a clear result of the DA's clean governance and focus on uplifting poor communities. When you run clean governments that use money wisely, there are more resources for service delivery and upliftment of poor communities.

The success of our delivery in these municipalities is also clear in the recent election results. In each of these municipalities, the DA significantly increased its share of the vote since we took over, showing that people are endorsing our record of delivery for all.

The DA will continue striving to deliver the best possible services for all the people in the places where we govern.

Statement issued by John Steenhuisen, DA Shadow Minister Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, May 27 2014
