Spy tapes: Accused number 1 must go to court - DA

Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma should have his day in court and answer to his corruption charges, the DA said on Friday.DA supporters were singing outside the High Court in Pretoria, where the NPA and President Jacob Zuma's lawyers were applying for leave to appeal a court ruling that corruption charges against the president be reinstated.

Provincial leader John Moodey and spokesperson Phumzile van Damme told the small crowd it was important for Zuma to go to court.

Van Damme went through the list of the charges Zuma faced. The party intended following the case until the end to ensure Zuma had his day in court and was prosecuted.

"To the ANC and accused number one, the DA does not forget," she said.

Moodey said the DA believed in upholding the law.

"We respect the law, we uphold the law, we follow the law. We apply the law to ensure that our democracy is protected," said Moodey.

On April 29, the Full Bench of the High Court in Pretoria found President Jacob Zuma should face the 783 charges of corruption related to the country’s multi-billion rand arms deal.

After a seven-year battle by the DA, the court ruled that the decision to discontinue the prosecution of Zuma should be reviewed and set aside.

The NPA and Zuma announced that they were applying for leave to appeal the high court's ruling. If it was granted, the matter would go to the Supreme Court of Appeal.
