Aircon failure halts surgery at Rahima Moosa - Jack Bloom

Aircon failure halts surgery at Rahima Moosa Hospital

4 December 2014

Caesarean sections have been halted this week at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child hospital in west Johannesburg after air-conditioning units failed in the operating theatres.

All ambulances have been directed to other hospitals while the problem is sorted out.

This is very disruptive and distressing for both patients and staff.

Yet again there has been a failure of preventive maintenance by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development.

If it's not one thing it's another thing as surgeons in hospitals around Gauteng never know whether they will be able to do their daily scheduled operations.

It would be better for hospitals to control all maintenance directly rather than be let down frequently by this hopeless department which needs an urgent overhaul to improve its effectiveness.
