ANC calls on supporters to defend the president

Party says continued exhibition of Murray portrait an affront to Zuma's dignity

ANC CALLS ON ALL ITS MEMBERS AND SUPPORTES TO DEFEND THE PRESIDENT

The African National Congress (ANC) calls on all its members, supporters and the Mass Democratic Movement structures to gather tomorrow, 22nd May 2012, at the South Gauteng High Court, corner Kruis and Pritchard streets in Johannesburg, to defend the dignity, reputation and integrity of the President of the ANC and of South Africa . The Court granted the ANC an urgent hearing at 12h00 tomorrow.

We view this portrait and the depiction of the President by the Brett Murray and Goodman Gallery as distasteful, vulgar, indecent and disrespectful.

It is our view that the continued display and exhibition of this so-called portrait will continue to be an affront to the dignity and the privacy of President Zuma in all his capacities but also as a South African whose right to human dignity and privacy is protected and guaranteed by the South African Constitution.

Members of the ANC, Supporters and the Mass Democratic Movement structures are requested to converge at Kruis Street, in Johannesburg as from 10h00 as an act of solidarity to the President and the ANC.

Statement issued by Jackson Mthembu, ANC National Spokesperson, May 21 2012
