ANC condemns terrorist attack in Kenya

The African National Congress strongly condemns the recent developments in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi, where a group of armed militia seized a shopping mall, killing scores of innocent people and wounding many others in the standoff that ensured between the supposed terrorist group and the security forces of the country. Guided by the Freedom Charter clarion call that "there shall be peace and friendship amongst the nations of the world," the African National Congress remains committed to a peaceful Africa and a world free from terror, human suffering, poverty and varying degrees of political, social and economic oppression.

The African National Congress sends our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, the injured and to the general population of Kenya during this tragic time. We further more submit our deepest sympathies to the families of other foreign nationals who were killed during the mall attack and in particular the family of South African national, James Thomas. The African National Congress supports the call made by the President of Kenya, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta, the former Prime Minister, Mr. Raila Odinga and the international community at large, that those responsible for these atrocities should be found and punished for these acts of terror.

Statement issued by Jackson Mthembu, ANC national spokesperson, September 23 2013
