ANC constituency office in Richmond torched

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of arson after an ANC constituency office in Richmond was torched on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the Richmond office was allegedly set alight by unknown people at around 17:20.

A case of arson has been opened, but no arrests have yet been made.

The ANC's Moses Mabhida regional secretary, Mzi Zuma, said the party’s administrator had received a phone call from the security guard at its Shepstone Street offices, informing him that the building was on fire.

"The only area that was affected was the reception. Our documents were not destroyed, because the fire services responded quickly."

Zuma said the party had met with the cluster commander and had asked that the case be prioritised to establish who was behind the incident.

"We condemn this criminal act, because nothing can make someone do this even if they are unhappy about something," said Zuma.

He said it was too early to speculate who was behind the attack.
