ANC KZN deplores massacre in Umsinga

Party expresses shock over attack which left five adult brothers of the Mkhize family dead

ANC CALLS FOR POLICE RAIDS IN UMSINGA AND SUROUNDING AREAS

10 March 2013

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has learnt with shock the news of the gruesome attack of the Mkhize family in Umsinga on Saturday morning. According to police reports, the attack left five adult brothers of the Mkhize family dead and three young boys extremely injured (see Sunday Tribune report).

The ANC deeply deplores this ruthless and vicious attack and we appeal to the community to assist the police in tracking down the murderers. We are concerned about the on-going violent attacks in Umsinga and the surrounding areas.

The ANC has noted with concern that in most attacks in these areas, high caliber firearms such as AK-47s are used. We strongly believe that these areas have dangerous weapons that have to be confiscated by the police.

There have been many other incidents in Umsinga where people have been killed in execution style. Recently, the ANC branch treasurer in Umsinga was also killed at his home by a group of unknown people.

It is worth noting that the alleged triggerman in the murder of the ANC North West Regional Secretary, Cde Obuti Chika, recently led the police to Umsinga, where the suspected murder weapon was found.

We commend the Provincial community safety and liaison MEC, Willies Mchunu and the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni for setting up a special task team to investigate the Saturday attack. While we commend the MEC for setting up the task team, we strongly believe that the police should conduct raids in Umsinga and the surrounding areas as it is clear that there are arms caches hidden to fan these on-going violent attacks.

"We also commend the MEC for community safety and liaison, Willies Mchunu for visiting the Mkhize family today. This indicates that our Provincial Government has hard working and caring leaders" said ANC spokesperson, Senzo Mkhize.
