ANC KZN expresses disgust over Dududu graves

Sihle Zikalala says that not all atrocities committed by the apartheid regime have been brought to the open

ANC CALLS FOR GOVERNMENT TO SPEED UP THE PROCESS OF VERYFIYING THE STATUS OF GRAVES DISCOVERED IN DUDUDU

23 March 2015

The African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal has expressed its disgust at the recent discovery of gravesites at the Glenroy Farm in Dududu in the South Coast of the province (see EWN report).

ANC Provincial Secretary Cde Zikalala said this brings us to the conclusion that not all atrocities committed against our people by the apartheid regime and its stooges have been brought to the open.

"We urge the provincial government to speed up the process of verifying the status of the graves which should also help us in the identification of the individuals buried there and the circumstances around their burial," Cde Zikalala said.

What makes this even more saddening is the fact that it just happened at a time when the country is intensely dealing with the inequalities of the past. The matter is surely bringing back the bad memories of our dark past. As the leader of society, we have faith in our communities that have worked with us very well throughout the process of rebuilding this country. We would therefore appeal to everyone who might have information likely to lead to the truth being put to the open to come forward.

It would also be important to indicate that we are committed to continue liaising with all other stakeholders to establish the truth surrounding the discovery of the gravesites. "We appreciate the cooperation and strong working relationship between government and current farm owners, which is Illovo Sugar. However that does not mean we should not call for tough measures against whosoever is found to have played a role that led to the death and secrete burying of those victims", Cde Zikalala said.

Whilst we urge government to speed up all the processes that will bring this matter to finality, we also want to commend the provincial government led by Premier Cde Senzo Mchunu for responding quickly to this gruesome discovery.
