Inkosi Victoria Dube first woman to chair a local house (July 10)

ANC CONGRATULATES NEWLY ELECTED AMAKHOSI

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal congratulates the newly elected chairpersons of the Local Houses of Traditional Leaders in KwaZulu-Natal.

The ANC welcomes the fact that among those elected today (10 June 2012) was Inkosi Victoria Dube, who made history by becoming the first women to chair a local house in this institution which historically has been always perceived as male dominated. Dube now chairs Uthungulu House.

"The fact that traditional leaders can on their own volition undertake a democratic process to elect one another and contest each other peacefully is indeed a victory for democracy. That male amakhosi can chose to elect a women to lead them is also indicative of the fact that the gospel of non-sexism espoused in our country's Constitution is permeating every sphere of life in our society and is now a way of life," said ANC Provincial Secretary Sihle Zikalala.

The ANC believes that the reconstitution of the houses and the election of new members will inject more energy and pace towards service delivery.

The ANC invites the newly elected members of the houses of traditional leaders to partner with government in accelerating the much-needed service delivery. They must take the institution of traditional leadership beyond just being a body of people who differ with government at every turn and usher in a new era of dedicated focus to development.
