ANC rejects DA motion to stop luxury car purchase

13 September 2016

The DA’s motion against the purchase of a new Mayoral luxury vehicles was rejected today by the Speaker of the eThekwini Council, Lekgoa Mapena.

We moved this motion following reliable reports that the new Mayor, Zandile Gumede is looking to purchase new vehicles, to form part of the Mayoral ‘fleet’.

This follows the Metro’s spending of R2 million of tax-payers money in 2014 on the current fleet of cars, which remain in good-use.

In a recent National Treasury Circular to the eThekwini Council, it was stipulated clearly that municipalities must take serious steps to curtail wasteful expenditure.

The DA will not stand for such blatant disregard for the people. The decision to purchase a new fleet not only undermines the provision of services and the creation of jobs, but also contradicts the recommendations of National Treasury.

It is clear now that we are in for a bumpy five years of wasteful expenditure in eThekwini, with looting and self-enrichment being the order of the day.

The DA will do everything possible to stop this gravy-train by ensuring that the people of eThekwini come first.
