ANC WCape condemns Cape Town Naspers land deal

Songezo Mjongile asks whether purchase not a form of payback from DA

ANC to investigate mutual relations with DA

The ANC outright condemns the irresponsible action of the City of Cape Town in a questionable transaction where land was bought at more than double the market value (R50 million sold for R120 million) in the Foreshore area adjacent to the CTICC.

There is cause for suspicion of a questionable relationship between the DA and Naspers, given the shareholding of the Premier and many leaders of the DA. Questions must be asked on the donations that Naspers, its directors and shareholders have made to back the DA over years now and whether this is not a form of payback. If it is a matter of "You rub my back and I'll rub yours" at the expense of the public, then it is a relationship open to corruption.

This happens in the context of the DA supporting mostly white business at the expense of upcoming or BBBEE entrepreneurs as the vast majority of all property deals in the city above R5 million have gone to white business.

On the ANC debt, it is true that the ANC is an organization of the poor dependent on the R12 subscription that each member pays annually. On the other hand the DA is supported by white big business that has no interest on addressing the socio-economic conditions, inequality, poverty and joblessness.

We support the action of the ANC Chief Whip to lay charges against the DA at the Public Protector. We will be making further supplementary submissions to ask for an investigation into mutually beneficiary relationships between Naspers (and all companies associated with it), its directors and shareholders with the DA as well as the personal relationships of individual decision makers on both sides.
