ANCWL congratulates our own Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

League beams with pride at news of minister's election as AU chairperson

RE: ANCWL CONGRATULATES OUR OWN NKOSAZANA DLAMINI-ZUMA

The ANCWL is beaming with pride at the news of cde Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma's election as chairperson of the African Union. The ANCWL NEC took a decision early on to support her throughout her campaign and we are thrilled that it was a success.

The WL are confident that Dlamini-Zuma is the most capable person to hold such an important position and this is not a South African victory or even a SADC victory, but rather a victory for the women of the African continent who have long suffered under the oppression of colonialism, wars, poverty and patriarchy.

Dlamini-Zuma is a long standing member of the ANCWL and has always had a strong focus on women empowerment and the gender equality agenda. We are confident she will continue on this path and carry the struggle for gender equality to the AU and throughout the African continent.

Her election as the first women to hold the most powerful position in the AU speaks volumes for the gains made in fighting patriarchy on the African continent.  We are fully aware of the challenges ahead and it is our belief that Dlamini-Zuma will drive the transformation agenda with a strong political will, effectiveness and success throughout Africa.

All of us who have followed Dlamini-Zuma's political career, would concur that she is a strong, capable, and caring women with an excellent track record for delivery. Her success in government and a deep understanding of the dynamics of Africa will inspire unity and stability across the continent.

Since 1994 capable women have been given an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the country. It is exciting to now see South African women start coming to the fore and furthering their contribution internationally and serving the African continent.

They continue to make us proud as the ANCWL, the successes of such women work to further the cause of a truly non-sexist society.
