ANCYL to report Lekota to SAHRC over killing claims

Statement issued by the ANC Youth League October 30 2008

THE ANC YL WILL REPORT PATRICK LEKOTA TO THE SOUTH AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION.

The African National Congress Youth League (ANC YL) is fed up by the rantings of Patrick Lekota, who continues to say that he is calling a Convention because the ANC YL President promised to kill people who will not vote Zuma. The ANC YL has on many occasions said and emphasized that we are not going to do anything unconstitutional and/or against the laws and regulations of the Republic of South Africa.

The Human Rights Commission has clarified and understood the context of the statement we made and our commitment that we will never use the word kill, even as a metaphor again. Despite the clarifications we have given, Lekota continues to portray a picture that the ANC YL and the ANC will kill people. He is in essence accusing the ANC YL of an intention to literally kill people.

The ANC YL believes that what Lekota is doing is a grave violation of our rights and freedoms as an organization. The allegations by Lekota that the ANC YL will literally kill people who do not vote for President Jacob Zuma is an serious allegation and defamation of the highest order. The ANC YL will approach the South African Human Rights Commission to report Lekota for accusing our organization of being potential murderers.

In its statement released on the 3rd of July 2008, the SAHRC said, "Mr Malema appreciated the criticism levelled against him for using the word "kill" and recognizes that the word could have been interpreted differently. Mr Malema also explained that it was never his intention to incite violence and undertakes never again to use the word and is committed to democracy and the advancement of human rights". Despite this clarification, Lekota continues to blatantly link the ANC YL to violence, and therefore disrespecting a democracy supporting institution such as the SAHRC, which the ANC YL holds in high regard. Lekota has shown that he does not respect democracy, not only within the ANC, but in the country as a whole. Lekota is a threat to South Africa's democracy and should be brought to book.

The ANC YL is at forefront of forming street committees and encouraging all its members to join Community Policing Forums to fight all forms of crime. We will always uphold Constitutional and democratic principles.
