Angry municipal workers on march in ECape - SAMWU

Union calling for a once-off 14th cheque, complete review of the current local govt job evaluation system

Angry municipal workers in the Eastern Cape to embark on provincial march

02 October 2013

The South African Municipal Workers Union in the Eastern Cape will be staging a provincial march this Friday 04 October 2013, involving municipal workers in their 1000's from all municipalities in the province.

The purpose of the march is to ensure that management accedes to the following reasonable and legitimate demands;

1. The implementation of a 14th Cheque to be given to all workers with immediate effect, this demand is as a result of a facilitator's proposal that was tabled at the level of South African Local Government Bargaining Council. The 14th Cheque once-off was proposed by the facilitator in order to compensate workers for receiving salaries based on incorrect salary scales and the long outstanding dispute since 2003, involving the fight for a more equitable wage curve.

2. We are also calling for a complete review of the current local government job evaluation system, in favour of a more equitable and fair system.

3. All municipalities must halt the privatisation and outsourcing of municipal services, as a result of the catastrophic implications associated with privatisation and outsourcing.

4. All vacant positions must be filled, so that quality public services can be delivered.

5. We are also calling for a review of irregular employment of section 56/57 employees (municipal management).

6. Development agencies must be incorporated into municipalities.

7. A moratorium must be placed on unilateral restructuring of municipal services.

8. Municipal staff regulations must be done away with, as it seeks to replace current conditions of employment.

The Unions General Secretary cde Walter Theledi will be at the March and will address workers.

Members of the media are invited to attend and report on the march;
