Arthur Chaskalson's contribution to our freedom immeasurable - Helen Zille

DA leader says late former Chief Justice worked to realise equality and justice for all

DA saddened by passing of former Chief Justice Chaskalson

The DA is deeply saddened by the passing of former Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson.

Former Justice Chaskalson was one of the giants of the anti-apartheid struggle whose contribution to our freedom today is immeasurable. He was part of the defence team in the Rivonia Treason Trial, he helped established the Legal Resource Centre and built strong foundations for the Constitutional Court as its Chief Justice, ensuring that the institution was animated by the values and principles of the Constitution and truly grounded in its spirit.

The realisation of equality and justice for all was a constant thread weaving through all he did.

South Africa is immensely enriched by the service he gave to our people and their struggles against oppression. Our deepest condolences to his family and all those who knew him.
