Carlisle spinning himself into political silliness on toll issue - Marius Fransman

ANC WCape leader says PEC will consider matter before it officially responds to SANRAL's proposal

The DA's Carlisle heads for a pile-up on toll roads

The ANC notes the DA position / statement on proposed future SANRAL toll roads in the Western Cape. It is to be expected that Carlisle will spin himself into political silliness on this issue.

The DA has implemented many anti-poor and anti-working class policies, such as the BRT, where it took an ANC idea that was to take subsidised transport to Khayelitsha and other townships and made it a transport system to privileged, mainly white areas around Blaauwberg.

The ANC will be discussing the toll roads at its PEC meeting and in its regions before it officially responds to the proposal by SANRAL. ANC Western Cape Chairperson Marius Fransman stated: "The ANC is acutely aware of the economic sensitivities of the issue of toll roads. The ANC will consider the matter and engage with the national government and SANRAL. After which process we will comment and see whether there are viable and responsible alternatives. The ANC can say however, it is not in favour of toll roads - especially where it will impact negatively on the poor."

The ANC believes Carlisle's cheap populism and irresponsible whipping up of emotions stems from the fact that the DA has been rejected by voters in relation to matters like the agricultural labour unrest and the closure of schools. We have no doubt that Carlisle will find himself in another political pile-up on this issue.
