COSATU clarifies Tony Ehrenreich's remarks

Federation says it fully supports marches, urges SADTU to make sure extra classes are organised

Learners and parents: support equal education!

The Congress of South African Trade Unions wishes to clarify a statement made yesterday, 22 April 2013, by Western Cape Provincial Secretary, Tony Ehrenreich, which has been widely reported in the media (see here).

The federation fully supports the marches in Cape Town and Pretoria organised by the SA Democratic Teachers Union, and the demands they are making on the defence of collective bargaining.

The COSATU Western Cape statement linked the teachers' dispute to the broader crisis in of inequality in education and the serious lack of infrastructure, such as libraries and laboratories, in poorer schools, and urged parents and learners to join the teachers' protest action in support of better and equal education for all.

The federation further urged SADTU to make sure that extra classes are organised to make up for the time lost during Wednesday's protest action.

Statement issued by Patrick Craven, COSATU national spokesperson, April 23 2013
