COSATU Eastern Cape Statement for May Day celebrations on May 1

25 April 2016

The Congress of South African Trade Union in the Eastern Cape declares its readiness for the celebration of the International May Day which will be held in four [4] centres in the province and is calling on all workers to come with their families to celebrate workers victories.

This year’s May Day Theme is ‘Celebrating 30 Years and Defending Collective Bargaining, Workers’ Job and Rights’.

Our most urgent task is to consolidate our work of building COSATU on the ground based on workplace struggles, service to members and continuous recruitment and solidarity campaigns amongst unions.

We will continue to roll out the following campaigns;

- Total ban on labour brokers

- Fight against job losses and retrenchments

- Defend collective bargaining workers rights to strike

- Crush all forms of racism and xenophobia

- Demand a legislated national minimum wage

- Implementation of National Health Insurance

- Scrapping of e-tolls and implement an integrated, affordable public transport system

- Intensify our recruitment campaign

The National leadership of the Alliance will be deployed in all four centres which are;

- Nelson Mandela Metro at Nangoza Jebe Hall

- Buffalo City Metro at King William’s Town, Victoria Grounds

- Chris Hani at Thobi Kula HALL

- OR Tambo at Port St John’s Grounds
