Federation appeals to disgruntled employees not to damage trains

COSATU outraged at train delays

30th January 2012

COSATU is outraged at the train delays in Cape Town that are leading to workers not arriving at work. These delays are in part because of the lack of sufficient train sets as well as the damage done to the train sets by some disgruntled employees.

COSATU calls on the workers to stop damaging the trains and to instead take up their grievances through an engagement with the company. COSATU also calls on the Metrorail management to work with partners to address the problems as had been agreed to last year.

COSATU is also concerned about employers who are deducting money from workers who are arriving late at work, as this is clearly not the fault of workers. It is apartheid that had placed workers so far from their work places and the DA administration who instead of providing My City busses to these communities leave them without any alternative transport. The bosses had benefitted from apartheid and the least they can do now because of this Apartheid construct, is not prejudice workers for the late arrivals

COSATU calls on bosses to pay the workers in full and to lodge claims against Metrorail for the money lost due to the late trains. COSATU will be taking further action against Metrorail should they fail to cooperate to resolve this crisis on the train system.
