COSATU WCape threatens strike over school closures

Federation demanding equal education resources and facilities for black and white schools

Strike against the Western Cape Government to equalise education in the Province and stop school closures.

COSATU will be engaging the Provincial Government of the w cape in a section 77 meeting tomorrow Wednesday 23rd August 2012 on the schools closures and the installation of equal education in the Western Cape. COSATU is demanding the equal education resources and facilities for black and white schools, so that all Western Cape learners have the same opportunities in education.

This is part of the COSATU support for the end to the closure of schools in the Western Cape, without a detailed education plan that brings equality in the relative funding of educational facilities amongst the different schools.

COSATU has had to file a section 77 notice because the Provincial Government did not want to engage COSATU on the educational situation of their children. This Section 77 empowers NEDLAC to summons Provincial Government to a meeting in which they are forced to engage with COSATU.

Should these discussions fail to reach an agreement between the COSATU and the DA Provincial Government, on the need for equality in education in the W Cape, as well as proper consideration of the school closures? Then COSATU would be entitled to go on a legal and protected strike against the Provincial Government for equality in resources for all schools with the ex model C schools.

This meeting will be held at the Cape Town airport at 10 00 tomorrow and we will make a statement to the press at the venue at 12h30. The venue of the meeting is the following:

Airport conference centre

Southern office block (ACSA)

Ground floor - Faranani room
