DA grows strongly in July 2 by-elections - Helen Zille

Party won two wards in eThekwini from the MF, after incumbent councillors crossed over to it

Strong DA growth across SA ahead of 2016

3 July 2014

The Democratic Alliance has shown strong growth in by-elections that took place across South Africa yesterday.

In KwaZulu-Natal the DA won all 5 wards we contested.

Decisive victories were recorded in the 2 battleground Ethekwini wards previously held by the Minority Front (MF).

In ward 73 (Chatsworth) we more than doubled our support to 70%, from 31% in 2011, and in ward 52 (Phoenix) we grew from 35% in 2011 to 55%.

We also increased our support in marginal ward 22, KwaDukuza, from 51% to 67%.

In Gauteng, the DA achieved excellent growth ahead of the 2016 elections, winning 6 of the 8 wards we contested.

In Ekhuruleni the DA won all 3 wards we contested. Notably, DA support increased from 47% to 55% to secure victory in battleground ward 24.

The DA also won 3 of the 4 wards we contested in Johannesburg, demonstrating growth of up to 16 percentage points from 2011.

Unfortunately votes wasted on smaller parties in marginal ward 58 was enough to give the ANC the most narrow victory margin of just 0.4%.

The DA also retained all wards contested in Mpumalanga and the Western Cape, and grew by 11 percentage points in the Northern Cape ward we contested.

These results are a clear sign that the DA continues to grow in key battleground metros and wards ahead of the 2016 elections.

We would like to thank every single one of our supporters who contributed to yesterday's successful results.
