DA requests motion of no confidence against Zuma - Mmusi Maimane

PL says Programming Committee has adopted a pointless agenda for Thursday's sitting (withdrawn)

DA Calls for Motion of No Confidence in President Zuma

26 November 2014

The Democratic Alliance has today requested that a motion of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma be debated at the special sitting of Parliament on 27 November 2014.

In light of the pointless agenda adopted by the Programming Committee this afternoon, and in light of the fact that the President refuses to appear to answer our questions, there will be opportune time tomorrow to debate this motion instead.

Without President Zuma appearing to answer questions, the confidence of the House in him must be tested.

The recall of Parliament is nothing more than a waste of millions of Rands in public funds.

The only justification for this exorbitant expenditure would be to allow President Zuma to fulfil his obligation under Rule 111 of the National Assembly.

President Zuma has no official appointments in his diary tomorrow and there is thus no reason why he cannot appear to answer oral questions. His failure to do so is in direct contravention of the Rules of the National Assembly.

President Zuma has only attended one oral question session since November 2013. We therefore reject yesterday's assertion by the Presidency that President Zuma has fulfilled his duties as a wilful misinterpretation of the rules.

This is nothing short of a further attempt by the ANC to find a scapegoat for the President's failure of executive accountability.

The DA will not allow the President to get away with reneging on his constitutional obligation and will pursue all available avenues to hold the President to account.
