DA's support for BEE promotes racism - Anton Alberts

FF+ MP says policy has led to the enrichment of a small group of politically connected individuals

DA support for BEE is misplaced and promotes racism against white and brown people

The FF Plus has reacted strongly against the DA's, as the governing party in the Western Cape, acceptance of black economic empowerment as an instrument of empowerment. "BEE is in nature a racist instrument which has largely failed to resolve South Africa's unemployment problems. It has only led to the enrichment of a small group of individuals who have close ties with the ANC and the indirect share-holding in the economy which the ANC has gained through it, is nothing other than a form of economic fascism. Given the DA's own maladministration in municipalities, such as the Midvaal municipality, there is no guarantee that the same won't happen under a DA government. In addition, BEE removes, on a de-jure basis, white capital and on a de-facto basis, brown capital from the economy," Adv. Anton Alberts, the FF Plus' parliamentary spokesperson on Trade and Industry said.

"No studies have been undertaken on the true impact of BEE on the economy and just on that basis alone, it is unscientific to willy-nilly recommend BEE as an instrument of empowerment. What, for example, was the effect of BEE to systematically remove white and brown capital from the economy?

If people are serious about addressing the unemployment problem, an inclusive model should be looked at, where there is no discrimination according to race but development assistance is offered on the basis of merit and need. The prerequisite should be the adding of increased value to the economy which is directed at breaking the dependence on the state. BEE however, strengthens the dependence syndrome on the basis of race and will merely lead to the existing value of ownership changing and not being created as such," Adv.  Alberts explained.

"True development assistance should take place without taking race into consideration so that the increasing poverty gap, which occurs amongst every race group, can be reversed. It should be the emphasis of a future recipe for growth and the debate should therefore focus on this. BEE is a misplaced policy for a crisis which requires serious attention," is the opinion of Alberts.
