Deputy Presidency's response to blue light incident inadequate - Kate Lorimer

DA Gauteng MPL says Cyril Ramaphosa's office should apologise directly to the assaulted road user

Poor response from Presidency to Ramaphosa blue light incident

11 September 2014

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng notes the poor response by the Presidency regarding a recent incident involving Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa's security detail in the province.

This is after the DA exposed the assault of a road user by Johannesburg Metro Police members forming part of the blue light convoy for the deputy president.

The Presidency is either aware of this incident and doesn't care or would simply prefer to pass all responsibility to the metro police.

While those officers involved in this assault must be brought to book, the Presidency should apologise directly to the affected road user and assure the public of their co-operation in the investigation.

I will be following up on the criminal case with Provincial Commissioner Lesetja Mothiba to ensure this case is properly investigated.

The DA has long advocated for the ban of all blue light brigades in Gauteng, as we have already done where we govern in the Western Cape.

The Presidency's poor response does little to help numerous residents of this province who have become victims of senseless and dangerous blue light convoys.
