EFF condemns DA no-go areas in WCape

Fighters say they were prevented from campaigning on farms for by-election in Witzenberg

EFF CONDEMNS DA'S NO GO AREAS AGAINST EFF

Sunday, 11 November, 2018

The EFF condemns the DA for closing farms in the Western Cape, as no-go areas for the EFF to campaign. This week, the EFF was campaigning for Ward 9 elections in Witzenberg and the same occurred.

This Ward has 3516 registered voters, with 4 voting stations, Tandfontein BewaarSkool Hall (715), wydekloof Commnunity Hall (1087), Kraamfontein Hall (1084) and Voorspog Primary School (620).

Mr Du Toit, of Kraamfontein Farm, has 2 IEC voting stations on his 2 farms. An email was sent to him, notifying him of the EFF visit, and he flatly refused. Yet the DA MPL, who is an MEC for Social Development, was allowed to campaign on those farms last Thursday. In our campaign trail, Mr Du Toit directed his farm managers to barricade the farm gates with bakkies and big field tractors, preventing the EFF campaigning team's access to the voters; and sent security with guns and dogs, to intimidate the EFF.

The farms and voting stations that the EFF was prevented from, Tandfontein Bewaarskool and Krammfontein Hall, contain 1 809 voters, who make up 51% of the total registered voters in the Ward.

The EFF has opened a case against Mr Du Toit. We also call on the IEC to intervene and facilitate access to voters, who must not be hidden away by racist farmers.

We reiterate our call for the right of access to voters and thus, those voting stations should be relocated; or the elections postponed until a free and fair elections climate is guaranteed by IEC.

The EFF will be left with no option, but to approach the Electoral Court, should the IEC be found wanting on its obligations of delivering free and fair elections.
